Checking the quality of forgings

Forging’s quality inspection is very important, and we should pay high attention to it. If there are some quality problems come out, these problems will not only influence the subsequent handling treatment and machining quality, but also influence the forging’s performances, reduce the service life, or even endanger the user’s personal safety. Here this article will introduce the contents about the forging’s inspection and other important parts.

Forging’s inspections are mainly divided into the internal and external inspection.

First, the external inspection checks the appearance quality. This contains whether the forging’s shape and size is made according to the drawings, and whether the surface has the defects.

Second, it’s the internal inspection which subdivides the internal quality. It contains the forging’s chemical component, microstructure and macrostructure, and project inspection about the mechanical property. This part inspection is impossible to be inspected by the external inspection.

The forging’s internal inspection always inspects & analyzes the chemical component for the important part or the large forgings.

Generally, we use the chemical analysis or spectral analysis to do the analysis or the inspection.

As for the inspections for white spots, internal crack, layered and overheated conditions which come out in structural steel and stainless steel, we mainly use the fracture experiment method. When inspect whether the grains of copper, aluminum, magnesium alloy are well-distributed, we can also use the fracture experiment method.

As for the mechanical and processing property inspection, we mainly use the impact testing machine, fatigue testing machine, tensile testing machine, hardmeter and endurance testing machine to measure all the values.

Here, we will talk about the permeation inspection method. This method can not only inspect the forging which contains the magnetic materials, but also inspect the forging’s surface defects which contains no ferromagnetic materials, such as cracks, folds, loose, etc. Generally, for the second type forging, this inspection method can only inspect the surface defects, but cannot find the defects which are below the surface.

Some insiders also said that consider the different environment factors, so different forgings have different fabrication material and processing requirement. So before the forging inspection, we should classify the forging products and conduct the inspection according to different using condition and stress.
